Closed or Open Eyed Meditation

Closed or Open Eyed Meditation

For most of us, when we first learn to meditate, we do so with our eyes closed. This is typically to help us shut ourselves down to the distractions of our external environment. In turn, this helps us focus inwards and allows us to develop our connection with ourselves. Let’s think about this for a moment… When we go about our daily lives, we don’t walk around with our eyes closed. Instead we go about our daily lives with our eyes wide open. (Can you imagine what it would be like if we did walk around with our eyes closed? Cue the chaos!)  Despite the fact that we walk around with our eyes wide open, we are often totally unconscious and unaware of the subtleties of the reality in which we live. This is where learning to meditate with our eyes open comes in very handy. Open eyed meditation trains us to become more consciously connected to ourselves whilst also building an awareness of the subtleties of our external environment. This gives us skills to cope and respond better to everything that we experience in our day to day lives. For me, I’ve learned to meditate with my eyes half open and half closed. This is because it allows me to occupy my imagination while also remaining consciously connected to myself. It expands my awareness further, making my day to day life that much easier to cope with and respond to it, rather than react to it. As I find meditating this way to be so successful, I seriously recommend it to you! Try meditating with your eyes half open and...

What is Meditation Anyways?

Let’s keep this as simple as possible and get straight to the point here: The Oxford Dictionary defines meditation as the ‘action or practice of meditating’ with meditating as the ‘focus [of] one’s mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation’. Right now, I think it’s much easier to separate the chanting as an aid, and the religious or spiritual purposes from the process of meditation. (I could easily get into these factors if you really want me to – let me know below in the comments section if you’d like to see a discussion on these). Meditation is basically a process whereby one focuses their mind on an image, object, sound, thought or feeling/sensation, or on emptying it altogether. By doing so, meditation allows us to go within and expand our consciousness and understanding of ourselves. It strengthens the relationship we have with ourselves, allowing us to cope more efficiently with our day-to-day lives. Relaxation, on the other hand, is a process during which one either consciously or unconsciously allows themselves to relax their body and mind. It entails letting go of the physical and mental tensions linked to stress and our day-to-day lives. In my opinion, meditation supports relaxation and relaxation supports meditation. Learning to meditate allows one to focus their minds, thereby supporting the process of letting go or releasing tension. Relaxation supports meditation by allowing one to physically and mentally relax into the process of meditation. Where do I start then? Try to find 1 minute time slots throughout...

Meditation – What Would You Like to Know?

How do I start a meditation practice? What’s the best environment to meditate in? How long/how frequently should I meditate for? Why can’t I quiet my mind during meditation? Meditation makes me fall asleep…why?   These are some of the questions I hear regularly from those who come along to my sound healing meditations. They are also questions that I have asked myself at one time or another along my own journey into meditation. Meditation ‘gurus’ abound, each with their own opinion on how to meditate. The same goes for styles of meditation: Buddhist, Zen, Raja, Transcendental, etc… The list is endless really.  Yet, they all have some sort of ‘guidelines’ or ‘rules’ on how meditation should be done. Sitting up or lying down? Eyes open or closed? Absolute emptiness of the mind or allow the mind to simply ‘be’? Should I become vegetarian or am I allowed to eat meat?   To be totally honest with you, some styles and ‘gurus’ are rigid in their meditation techniques, while others much more relaxed. So where do you start? Where do you begin your journey into meditation? If you’ve been practicing meditation for a while now, how can you take it further?   With so many questions floating around, I thought I’d tackled them head on with a video series sharing meditation tips and answering any questions that you may have.  Now, I don’t profess to know everything there is to know about meditation, but I can say that I’ve learned enough over the years, that I can definitely help you find some answers to those burning questions you have...

Healing the Inner Child

Can one really heal the inner child within? Why would anyone want to dredge up the deep, dark past experiences of their lives? Healing the inner child is a concept that’s been bandied about for years. It’s something that I’ve known about for ages, but have never fully allowed myself to relax into because I feared that I wouldn’t be able to cope with what would come up. I also had the excuse that it was impossible to do because I couldn’t (and basically still can’t) remember my childhood, with the exception of very few moments, combined with the bits and pieces I’ve managed to get out of immediate family. So, I’ve found myself on this emotional roller coaster ride throughout my life, where I allow myself just enough energy to ‘dip’ into healing my inner child. Yes, I’d get some relief and some positive changes in the way in which I lived my life, but they weren’t long lasting and I’d soon find myself in another situation that seemed to hurt even more than the last one. The thoughts of “Why is this happening again? I did the work already, why me?” would float through my head. I’d pretend it wasn’t happening to me for as long as I could until, at last, I couldn’t take it anymore. Then and only then would I allow myself to dip my toes back into the world of healing my inner child. Sound familiar? I’ve done it so many times, I can’t even begin to tell you about all of them. Yet, more recently, something has changed. There has been a...

Am I Worthy?

Am I good enough? Am I deserving of receiving the love, appreciation and attention of others? Am I deserving of receiving abundance? These are some of the questions that many of ask ourselves on a daily basis. Most of the time we’re not aware that we’re saying these things to ourselves. Sometimes we are. Questions such as these are examples of limiting beliefs that stop us from fully receiving love, appreciation and attention of others around us. Having limiting beliefs like this can make life pretty darn miserable. Imagine living in a world where you want nothing more than to be loved and accepted, yet it somehow keeps eluding you. You may not ask for help when you need it. You may push other people away from you, always keeping them at arms length. You may sabotage your relationships with your friends, family and partners. You may live a very ‘lonely’ existence because it’s easier that way. All of this because of those simple words “I am not good enough” or “I am not worthy”. My Story Recently, I’ve had these exact limiting beliefs brought to surface in a very matter of fact way. When I first received the letter to go into the hospital for tests, I didn’t want to tell anyone, let alone ask anyone for their help. After all, who wanted to help me? Yet, something inside me told me I needed to ask for help, so the first thing I did was indirectly ask all of my friends, clients and readers to join me on my 40 day healing mantra practice. The response was shocking...

Why Mantra?

In last week’s blog, I shared with you how I use mantra as a tool for helping me cope with and respond to the hard ball’s life can throw at us. As I’m a week into my 40 day practice, I thought I’d share a bit more about why mantra is so helpful when times get tough. What is Mantra and How Does it Help in Times of Stress? Mantra deserves a whole series of posts as a topic, so I won’t go into it in too much depth for now. What I will say about mantra is this: Mantras are energy based sounds – they derive their power from the energetic effects produced by the sounds created when chanted repeatedly. By pronouncing a mantra, we create a specific physical vibration in the form of sound that in turn produces various ‘energetic effects’ in the physical and subtle bodies. In other words, chanting mantras, or the repetition of phrases or prayers, creates an energetic effect on our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels of being. For me, mantra is a total godsend! Not only do I find chanting and listening to mantra calming and soothing when my stress levels and emotions are running high, I also find they give me the energetic boost that is often needed when times get a bit tough. Going back a week or so, when I got the news of the medical exams I was about to have undertaken, I was quite literally terrified. I almost immediately chose to work with a rather long mantra to help heal anything that may have been out...

Dealing with the Hard Balls of Life

Sometimes life can throw you a hard ball (or two, or even three or four all at the same time). Usually these hard balls come at times when you least expect them and they can totally throttle you, dropping you to the ground in an instant. How you respond to the hard balls will determine whether you – quite literally – sink or swim from that point forward.  Whether you respond or react will either stop you from living your life or allow you to move forward with some grace and dignity still intact. This past week, I’ve had one of those hard balls smack me straight in the head and gut. Well, actually, I’ve had several hard balls hit me smack in the face within a very short space of time.  The biggest one is something that, although I’m not quite ready to openly talk about yet, has given me a massive wake up call in how I’m living my day-to-day life. The emotions have flowed freely and quite primitively too as I originally reacted, in fear, to the news I had just received. Then, after reaching out for help from one of my wonderful girlfriends, I was able to find a place of strength and turn my reaction into a response. She reminded me why I work with sound as a healing modality and how THIS situation was my opportunity to harness my knowledge, skills and spirituality to help me transform this situation into a positive one. Then I spoke with my homeopath to gain further insights into ways in which I can support and ease my...

Do You Have an Attitude?

Before you go getting all offended by that question, in that child-like ‘who me?’ sort of way, don’t because the attitude I’m talking about here is the one you have towards being grateful. In the world we live in where we’ve become absorbed and concerned about when we must ‘do this, do that and everything else’ . The result of this ‘do, do, do’ type lifestyle is that we start to take things for granted and forget to be appreciative of the things we do get to experience and do. Does taking things for granted allow us to live our lives from a state of high vibration or energy?  I think you’ll agree with me that it does quite the opposite. So, how do we change our experiences of taking things for granted into one that supports a life of love, energy and high vibrational living?  Take a moment to watch this short video to find out how… Gratitude! Gratitude! Gratitude!  Yes, that’s the answer! Being grateful for everything from the big things to the teeniest, tiniest little things all play a role in how we feel, how well we function and how happy we are with ourselves and with others. Having an attitude of gratitude helps to raise our energetic vibration, thereby allowing us to live a life more in flow. I know from personal experience how being grateful can transform the way I perceive the world, give me more energy and allow me to live my life more confident and in flow.  Gratitude is one of the most important aspects of successful living. So, I’d love to...

The Most Important Thing You Can Do

It’s been a week since you last revisited or set your intentions for the year ahead and you may be starting to wonder what you can do next to make sure you stay on the ‘straight and narrow’, to keep you on track. Taking action is the best way to keep yourself on track. Yes, it really is that simple. Watch this week’s short video to get a good understanding of what I’m talking about. If you haven’t already begun to have ideas of what your most important action(s) can be that you can take today or this week that will keep you moving forwards towards your intentions and goals, I highly recommend you take a few moments right now to do so. Write it down on a piece of paper or a sticky note and place it in a prominent position to remind you what you need to do before anything else. If you have more than one action to take, number them according to importance. Then do it (or them, in the case of multiple actions). Oh yes, share with me what the most important thing is that you can do to move you in the direction you wish to be heading by leaving a comment below....

To Make or Not to Make New Year’s Resolutions?

Are you one of the millions of people around the world who sets New Year’s Resolutions only to find that they go completely belly up within a couple of months, few weeks or even a few days? Welcome to the club! Several years back I actually gave up on setting New Year’s Resolutions because I simply wasn’t getting anywhere with them. Then when I failed to follow through, I felt like a total failure as a person, which in turn added to my already low self-esteem and motivation levels. For many years, I totally steered clear of setting New Year’s Resolutions.  Yet, a few years ago, I stumbled upon a couple of simple little tricks for setting goals. You see, with all the time I have spent on the personal development circuit, I’ve also had a few attempts at setting goals (which, for the most part, failed dismally – aside from a few tiny successes).  Those little successes got me thinking a few years ago about why those goals came to fruition (and not the others) and I realised a couple of very important things about setting goals or New Year’s Resolutions. One of the biggest things I realised was that the resolutions and goals I was setting were based upon values that were external to my true heart’s desires or my soul’s truth.  Instead, they were based upon what society and the media were telling me I should want, do and look like. With this realisation, came the understanding that those successful ‘goals’ were actually in alignment with my values and my soul’s truth. Everything else fell to...
